Beer Ingredients In 1516 a law was passed in Germany that is known today as the German Beer Purity Law, or Reinheitsgebot. This law is often cited as the world’s first food and consumer protection law, mandated by legal decree, that no ingredients other than water, hops, and malted barley were to be used in the production of beer.
